CheckPeople is a background check company that has been in the industry for over two decades. Their main premise is to offer as complete a background check as possible for a more affordable price than competitors. They believe that everyone should have access to information. The information may not be as detailed as with other companies, but this service does have some positives going for it.
Number of Public Records
CheckPeople offers the following public records:
- Full names and addresses
- Marriage records
- Divorce records
- Criminal records
- Status on the sexual offender database
That is not as many as other background check companies that we have reviewed, but it does present a basic picture of a person’s history. It can provide the information that would otherwise take someone hours searching through courthouse records, Internet search results, and phone books.
A CheckPeople report is very straightforward, with no extra bells and whistles. It’s a very simple database that offers up standard information about a person, with a base level cost for that service. It doesn’t offer any additional information or provide options for upgraded reports. However, you can also see how many registered sex offenders live in the vicinity of a specific address.
Ease of Use & Interface
CheckPeople earns most of its rating through its simple user interface. The site is easy to navigate and the list of results is very well organized, so you can quickly select what you want. You can also see all the names you’ve previously searched so that it’s easy to go back to one if necessary. You can search by name or by phone number, and you get a list of matches that includes location and relative information so that you can find the right match without clicking on each potential match. This helps cut down on time when you are searching for a generic name. There is also a menu at the top of each match page where you can select what kind of data you wish to see, such as sex offender records or marriage history. It’s simple to find out if there are no results.
However, there are two downsides to the interface at CheckPeople. The first is a tendency to stall during a search, which almost always results in having to start all the way over. The second is that cancelling the monthly fee requires a phone call, which can take quite a while. There is no option to cancel online, and there is also no option to purchase just a single background check.
Compared to other background check companies, CheckPeople earns only three stars. While the information wasn’t incorrect in the sense that it returned false results for a name, the system did frequently give outdated information that was not useful. Additionally, there were many cases in which information that should have been reported, such as a previous marriage, was not provided in the CheckPeople report.
In order to get a good understanding of a person’s criminal history and status as a sexual offender, this database is accurate enough. However, for a thorough report on a person’s history, this database may not be as reliable as other services out there.
The site is average on speed. Initial searches will take longer because you must sign up for a monthly account, and that process did result in a bit of a wait time. However, once the initial search is out of the way, the site becomes much faster, similar to many other services we have reviewed.
